The Annual Kiwanis - Rotary Meeting Martin Horak is Professor of Political Science at Western University and Associate Director of the Centre for Urban Policy and Local Governance. He is also the former Director of Western’s Local Government Program. His research focuses on various aspects of local and urban politics in Canada, including urban governance, local elections, and public transit and housing policy. He is a long-time observer of London politics and a frequent media commentator on urban politics and policy. Nafis Ahmed was born and brought up in Dhaka, Bangladesh till he graduated high school studying science. Then in 2016, he moved to Malaysia to get a bachelor's in business administration with a major in marketing from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). There he was exposed to an extremely diverse learning environment with his classmates coming from over 40 different countries. Nafis started his career in Malaysia with a tech startup called UMAI as their Marketing Consultant. He spent 3 years with UMAI developing their brand and then managing their accounts in Denmark, Portugal, Estonia, France, and Germany. Nafis then moved to Canada in 2022 to specialize in Public Relations, Corporate Communications, and Brand Management through wonderfully designed programs at Fanshawe College. After coming to Canada, he joined BGC London (formerly Boys and Girls Club of London) aligning his knowledge, experience, and passion for community development to help provide more opportunities for success and wellness to the children, youth, and seniors of London community. Nafis also learned extensively about Social Business directly from the founder of the concept, Nobel Laureate Professor Yunus. During his undergrad, he also kept busy participating in and organizing valuable events including HULT Prize (Global competition to address social issues and UN SDG Goals) and TEDx. |

Emma Duerden, PhD is a Canada Research Chair in Neuroscience and Learning Disorders. She is an Associate Professor in Applied Psychology in the Faculty of Education and a member of the Centre for Brain & Mind at Western University, Canada. Her research is focused on child and adolescent brain development and mental health. Her research on media and brain development examines how screen time impacts children’s learning and memory abilities as well as the association with anxiety and depression. She has made over 90 media appearances on live national radio and TV, as well as print media. In recognition of her contributions to child health research, she has received local, provincial and national awards and was recently appointed as a college member of the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Duerden will speak about how digital technologies affects children’s health. |

Rotary Club of London has a designated volunteer time slot, Wednesdays from 3 to 5 pm, at the London Blood Donor Clinic. Our team of trained volunteers work in the hospitality area focusing on donor safety and experience. Volunteers greet donors with a smile, engage in conversation and ensure they feel at ease throughout the donation process. The care and attention volunteers provide whether ensuring they have refreshments after a donation, or just being there to ensure they are doing well are often why donors return. As one of the last faces donors see before they leave the donor centre, they can play a critical role in helping donors feel they’ve made a meaningful impact that day.
