The World Community Service (WCS) Committee is in the process of selecting a new project that (1) can be completed within 12 months, (2) has a Host Rotary Club Partner in a 3rd world country that has a strong commitment to the project, (3) is sustainable and (4) can be funded by funds raised by our Rotary club, our Satellite Rotary Club, the host Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of London’s Foundation. 

 

The committee is actively seeking additional members who want to be involved in an International project to join our committee. Every project will require a “champion” who will coordinate the work of our club members, the club Foundation and the members of the Host Club. 

 

Over the past 5 years, the WCS committee has been involved in the following projects:

 

For several years, this project assisted 480 students to attend school in Danli Honduras, by supplying the students with the required uniforms, shoes, back packs and books and fees for extra activities. 

 

Sponsored by the “women of the Rotary Club of London”, the Rotary Club of London gave $5,000 as a matching grant, to the Empowerment Project. The Empowerment Project assists women entrepreneurs in developing countries around the world by providing mico-financing which enables them to use their talents to lift themselves out of poverty. A portion of the contributed funds provided mico-financing to the mothers of the “Market Kids” of Danli, Honduras, allowing them to financial support the education of their children.

 

Named after the founder of Rotary, The Paul Harris School is an elementary School serving 380 students. After 30 years of use, it required upgrades to the electrical and septic systems. This was accomplished, in part, by a contribution grant of $10,000 grant from the Rotary Club of London.

 

 

As part of the Rotary Haiti Task Force, our club assisted our host club (Petionville) with the repair of two damaged school buildings affected by the January 2010 earthquake. We also supplied school equipment and material to 17 schools in Petion Ville. The damaged schools, Academy Lise Derisiers located in Archaie and La Petite Sirene in Dalma   required school pews, kindergarten chairs and tables, and desks and work tables for the teachers. They were supplied through collaboration with the Grand Bend Rotary Club and other local clubs to gather surplus school furniture and supplies from school closing in SW Ontario. The total funds to complete this project was $154,000 which also included contributions from other District 6330 Clubs, the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and individuals. Thousands of children benefited from this project. 

 

With $10,000, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Aquin, The Rotary Club of London supported the development of a “Children’s Cybercafe and computer literacy program” through the supply of computers and operation funding. A team of London Rotarians attended the HRDF school in Aquim Commune and trained local young people to construct Bee Hives and food dryers. 

 

When disasters occur, the committee will collaborate with Disaster Relief Rotarian Action Group, Disaster Aide Canada and/or Shelter Box
