--MEMBERSHIP APPROVE TWO PROJECTS--
On January 12, 2026, the Rotary Club of London held a Special General Meeting and approved two major service initiatives — one strengthening our community here at home, and one advancing lifesaving care abroad. Local Service Chair Don Stevens presented the case for supporting the London Food Coalition’s new refrigerated food-rescue truck, noting that in the past three years our Club and Foundation have contributed over $159,000 toward community improvements. Members voted to approve $15,000 toward this critical vehicle, helping expand London’s capacity to rescue and redistribute surplus food to 27 agencies across the city.
World Service Chair Keith Morrow then outlined the international partnership Global Grant supporting pediatric heart surgeries in India which will fund lifesaving operations for children who cannot otherwise access cardiac care. Members approved $22,000 CAD in support, enabling Rotary’s matching structure to multiply our impact. It was a unanimous spirit of “Service Above Self” as both motions carried. Rotary in action — locally and globally. Following the affirmative vote President Lian Bardaweel commented ""I’m incredibly proud that these approvals reflect the heart of Rotary’s mission — taking meaningful action both locally and globally. By supporting the London Food Coalition, we’re strengthening food security and dignity in our community, while our investment in lifesaving pediatric heart surgeries reinforces Rotary’s belief that where a child is born should never determine their chance to live. Proud of our members for supporting initiatives that deliver lasting, measurable impact."

After a particularly bitter run of winter weather, many District 6330 Rotarians are dreaming about escaping to warmer climes. Mexico, anyone? Or how about Portugal or Morocco? But wait — what about the impact of flight on the carbon in our atmosphere, which is continuing to cause catastrophic climate change (including the polar vortex that chilled us in January)? The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) offers a carbon offset program to address this concern. ESRAG lets you compensate for the carbon impact of air travel by estimating your carbon emissions and making a voluntary donation to the Environment Fund of The Rotary Foundation. Donations through this program support Global Grant projects that address the causes of climate change by reducing emissions and sequestering carbon. Your flight carbon estimate is based on the average carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions per hour of flying time for your seat class. It takes into account scheduled flight times, the number of flight legs, and takeoffs and landings. You can make your donation at two levels: the basic rate of $10 per tonne or the premium rate of $30 per tonne. Nature-based solutions (think trees) typically cost around $10 to compensate for a tonne of carbon emissions. Emissions Trading Systems price carbon emissions at between US$30 and $80 per tonne. “I worked out the cost of going to Nicaragua and back, and the offset was less than $100,” says Doug Thompson, Chair of the District 6330 Environment Committee. “Most people don’t realize the carbon footprint of travel, either by air or cruise ships.” Does this kind of program work? That’s a subject of debate. The David Suzuki Foundation says offsets help individuals think about the environmental costs of travel, but the price per tonne is often far below the estimated costs of the damage caused by carbon pollution. The Foundation advocates using offsets when you fly, while also encouraging less flying overall. Next time you’re thinking about getting away, why not include the planet in your plans and fly with an easier mind?
